Childcare
Looking at childcare / daycare options can be daunting - particularly if you've never done it before.
I've included a short list of considerations and things to ask your provider before making a decision. As always - let me know if there's anything I've forgotten.
Considerations
1 / Timing
-
Consider what age you require daycare from. This includes when you and your partner may return to work or other commitments, and how many days you require care for.
-
The general rule is to ask for sooner / more days as you can always revise down. Most people recommend just getting on the list and working from there.
2 / Proximity
-
Depending on your situation, you may find it useful to look for care that is near your home / the primary carers home or work (or somewhere between the two)
3 / Budget and Funding Available
-
Childcare is expensive. It's good to do some research on the day rate of the childcare provider (including discounts for multiple days / siblings etc). Do your research on any funding available (funding from government, pre-tax incentives from employers etc.). Everything helps here!
4 / Routines
Most website will outline what the child's day will look like (per age group). Think about what's important to you - for us it was the following:
-
Whether there was a mix of indoor / outdoor activities
-
Whether there was variation in the activities (e.g. cooking / painting / excursions for older kids)
-
Opening hours and days (particularly to work in with your schedule)
5 / Testimonials
-
It's usually best if friends / contacts already have children at the provider - they can tell you how they find it, however also look at google reviews and any external ratings as a guide
6 / Open Days / Tours
Most places have scheduled open days / tours. I've included a list of questions to ask below, but generally recommend checking that the children look happy, the place looks clean, and the educators are friendly and welcoming.
Questions to Ask
1 / Peer Group
-
How many children are in the same age bracket in the room?
-
How many carers per child?
-
Is there a single point of contact to discuss my child's needs / development?
-
What ages will be in same room?
-
Do carers move between the rooms with the children as they advance in age
-
How many children in the centre overall?
2 / Communication
-
How do I communicate with the centre about my child?
-
What is the policy if my child is sick / something happens at the centre and I need to be notified?
-
What is the policy if another child is sick?
-
How will you communicate with me about my child?
3 / Fees and Enrolment
-
What is included / excluded in the fees (e.g. nappies, bedding, food, activities, excursions etc.)
-
What is the notice period if we choose to unenrol our child?
-
What is the waitlist time?
4 / Logistics
-
What are the pick up and drop off times?
-
Is there storage for my pram?
-
Is there parking
-
Are children taken off premises? What safety measures are in-place if so?
